Our KS1 children had a fantastic day exploring the fascinating Locomotion. During our visit, we discovered lots of different types of trains from throughout history and learned about how rail travel has changed over the years.
We also found out that the word locomotion means the ability to move or travel from one place to another, helping us understand why trains played such an important role in transporting people and goods including why the seaside became so popular in the Victorian era.
One of the highlights of the day was climbing aboard a real steam engine, where we were given a guided tour. We learned where the coal and water were stored before a journey began and discovered how a steam engine works. The coal was burned in a firebox to heat water in a large boiler, creating steam. As the steam built up under pressure, it pushed pistons that turned the wheels, allowing the train to move along the tracks.
It was an exciting and memorable day full of hands-on learning, curiosity and discovery, bringing our learning about transport to life!
