In school, we are working towards the Educate and Celebrate Award. This is an initiative to help develop awareness of equality issues specifically linked to the LGBTQ+ community. It aims to educate children about the different relationships and families that they may encounter throughout life as well as an understanding of what we mean by gender identity and gender equality. For more information about the charity, please click here.
Last year, we achieved the Bronze Award with our hard work. This included looking at the Equality Act and gaining an understanding of what the protected characteristics are, the use of LGBTQ+ friendly books in school and an understanding of the terms associated with the communities. In summer, the children had fun participating in a Pride Parade around our school field and producing a corridor full of their artwork about what Pride means to them.
This year, our newly established ‘Pride Not Prejudice’ team have been working hard to make more changes around school. They have been looking into our after school clubs and uniform policy to ensure that all genders are included. They have made their own display board and been integral in making choices about how we learn LGBTQ+ topics and have even made their own display board to spread the equality message. See what we’ve been doing below:
Aiming for the Silver Award
Our newest Pupil Voice group is linked to promoting equality and diversity as we aim to receive the silver award in the Educate and Celebrate program.
This week, our Class 5 and 6 were tasked with coming up with a logo for our newly formed group named ‘Pride Not Prejudice’. We had some fantastic logo ideas and have shared some of them below.
The children have also been working hard at finding ways to make our school even more welcoming to all people and even looking at some of our policies to see whether they are inclusive.
Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month
In school, our Pride Not Prejudice pupil voice group decided that they would like to celebrate LGBTQ+ History month as we’ve done work on Black History Month and specific disabilities in the past. We decided that they would choose some inspirational figures linked to the LGBTQ+ community and do some work to present what they had learnt. Below are some examples of some work from our oldest children and some of our youngest children.
